The attacks resulted in a number of expansions of the U.S. government's counter-terrorist capabilities. The FBI instituted a formal alert system to notify all agencies under Homeland Security of potential threats. In addition, a number of the Counter Terrorist Unit's past missions were declassified for the first time. 9/11 precipitated the passage of the Patriot Act.
