Biography and career[]
Alude Mahali was born in the town of Mthatha (formerly Umtata) in the province of Eastern Cape, South Africa. Her father is a history professor and her mother is a psychologist. The family belongs to the Xhosa people. During Mahali's childhood, she spent 6 years in the United States while her father was studying his PhD at the University of Illinois. After that, they returned to South Africa.
Mahali went to Umtata High School for a year, and then Port Shepstone High in Kwa-Zulu Natal. It was there that she developed an interest in drama. In 2004, Mahali enrolled at Rhodes University to study Drama, graduating in 2007. After that, she continued her Master's degree in Theatre Making and her Doctorate in Philosophy, both from the University of Cape Town.[1]
In 2014, Mahali was a lecturer at the Edna Manley College for Visual and Performing Arts (EMCVPA) in Kingston, Jamaica. Since 2015, she has been working as a Research Specialist in the Human and Social Development for the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC). Mahali's areas of research include identity, memory, blackness, womahood, intersectionality, and how these areas relate to youth in South Africa. She also investigates the domestic worker trope in contemporary South African art and culture.
