Chiapas was a province of Mexico.
Jorge Rafael Marquez was born and raised in Chiapas by a poor soybean farmer. It was here that he first demonstrated his incredible aptitude for patterns, quickly outstripping his peers and managing to solve his cousin's Rubik's Cube in under a minute. He also witnessed many sharecropper scams and other corruption, engendering a deep distrust of society in general.
In the mid-1990s, when Marquez was 21 and had made a fortune in computing, his father and cousin were killed in a police raid for protesting the neglect of the Mexican government. This was the impetus that led Marquez to abandon his former identity and turn to terrorist acts under the nom de guerre of "Zapata." (Chaos Theory)
