President David Palmer conferred with General Bowden about number of potential U.S. casualties if China and Russia were to ally against them in a war with the countries suspected of assisting Second Wave in detonating a nuclear weapon on U.S. soil.

In Day 4, Jack Bauer, Curtis Manning, and Howard Bern kidnapped Lee Jong from the Chinese consulate in Los Angeles. Koo Yin, the Chinese Consul, was killed by friendly fire. The Chinese found out who was involved and demanded that Jack be handed over for trial.
To prevent the possibility of Jack implicating the American government in ordering the raid on the consulate and giving up valuable intelligence under torture, Walt Cummings authorized Secret Service Agent Dale Spalding to kill Bauer. David Palmer learned of this plan and warned Jack, who conspired with Tony Almeida, Michelle Dessler, and Chloe O'Brian to fake his own death.

After the day's events were settled, the Chinese captured Jack Bauer and forced him onto a ship called the China Queen, explaining that China had not forgotton his actions eighteen months before.

Jack Bauer was tortured for 20 months in China by Cheng following his capture. Cheng sought to extract classified information from Bauer, and especially wanted to know if the man Hong Wai was a secret American agent. Jack was apparently rescued by two American operatives, and was taken to a field where Hong Wai appeared. When prompted, Jack nodded his head that he recognized Hong, inadvertently revealing that Hong was the American agent. Cheng and a whole group of Chinese soldiers appeared, and Jack realized that the two American rescuers were merely mercenaries. Cheng told the mercenaries they would be paid, murdered Hong Wai, and had Jack sent back to his filthy cell.
Audrey Raines was presumed killed in a car crash while away looking for Jack. She was actually captured and held by the Chinese.

In the United States, Cheng Zhi arranged for the theft of an extremely valuable Russian FB subcircuit board. Chinese military officials desired this component because it contained unencrypted Russian military secrets, which would enable China to have access to Russia's entire defense grid. China sent a submarine to an oil rig off the coast of California to pick up Cheng, his men, Phillip Bauer (and his hostage grandson), and the component. The sub turned away when the rig was obliterated by an F-18 Hornet air strike authorized by Vice President Noah Daniels. China was sent a warning about their attempt to steal the FB subcircuit board. With Cheng Zhi in custody and the component destroyed, Jack's conflict with the Chinese ended.
