Dale Spalding was a Secret Service agent during Day 4.

After Jack Bauer had illegally invaded a Chinese consulate to retrieve a terrorist collaborator, President Charles Logan and White House Chief of Staff Walt Cummings discussed ways in which they could avoid an international incident with the Chinese. Cummings recommended to Logan that Bauer be killed in an apparent "accident", but Logan only weakly rebuked him, in a manner that was equivalent to condonation.

Secret Service Agent Spalding was sent by Cummings to apprehend and then later kill Bauer. He was given his orders in secret, but Mike Novick heard Cummings' side of the phone conversation. He informed David Palmer, who then warned Jack.

Spalding traveled to CTU Los Angeles to make the arrest, and Bill Buchanan reluctantly prepared to help him. However, Jack staged a shootout and faked his death with the help of agents Almeida, Dessler, and O'Brian. Spalding checked Jack's pulse, and was quickly escorted out of the room.
