As Marika Donoso returned to her apartment to pack her things so she could leave the country with her boyfriend, her sister, Rosa was asleep with the television turned onto a talk show in which the host, Pam was interviewing Lila Lee about a cookbook she had recently written, Recipes from My Family: A Living Genealogy. Lee said she got the idea to write the book as she was preparing meals for her children using recipes that relatives such as her grandmother used to cook for her when she was little.
