Gary Matheson was the abusive husband of Carla and father of Megan. He was the employer of Kim Bauer, his daughter's au pair, during Day 2.

Early in the day when Kim was looking after Gary's daughter Megan, Kim overheared a fight between Gary and his wife Carla. While trying to protect Megan, Kim took a hit from Gary and then Gary threw Megan to the ground, giving Megan a severe blow to the head. Then he got a phone call from his company and Kim left with his daughter while he was distracted.
Around 11:35 AM, he fatally beat Carla after she got a call from Kim about Megan at the hospital. Gary put Carla's body in the car trunk before heading to the hospital after Megan.
Kim ran with Megan, trying to get to CTU, and Gary followed them. After the attack on CTU, Megan was moved to a hospital. Gary showed up at the hospital and tried to take Megan home, but Kim was able to get to her before Gary could make her leave. He caught up with them later in the parking lot, but was knocked out by Kim's boyfriend Miguel.
By the end of the day he was on the run from the cops, but returned to his home to find a cop outside. He killed the cop went inside to grab some money. While there he heard a noise, and discovered Kim Bauer was in his house. He grabbed a gun and went after her. He followed her up to the attic. Kim fell through the ceiling and onto Gary, knocking him out. She stole his gun and, as he came back to consciousness, he was shot by Kim Bauer. His breathing was labored and erratic. Kim shot him again, and he died on the floor of his closet.
