Santaolalla started his music career in 1967 as part of the band Arco Iris which fused rock music with Latin American folk. He left the band in 1975, and then formed Soluna, a band which recorded the album Energía Natural in 1977. Santaolalla moved to Los Angeles and began working solo, producing three albums over the next 20 years. His third album Ronroco contained the "Iguazu" track, which has been featured in many other film and television soundtracks such as The Insider, Collateral, Babel and Deadwood. In the late nineties, Santaolalla moved into working on film soundtracks, scoring the films Amores Perros, 21 Grams and The Motorcycle Diaries. He has won two Academy Awards, for his work on the films Brokeback Mountain and Babel.
