Jane was one of very few people who knew that Saunders had survived Operation Nightfall, an undercover mission ordered by Senator David Palmer and commanded by Jack Bauer. Saunders believed that his country had left him to die and wanted revenge.

Jane's mother died 4 and a half years prior to Day 3 and 6 months later, Saunders got back in touch with his daughter. He then sent her $10,000 each month. She had no previous knowledge that Saunders was behind the day's attacks.

Ryan Chappelle investigated the financial records of Stephen Saunders, which led CTU to Jane, now a 19 year old student at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she worked at the campus library. She was extracted from her workplace and replaced by Kim Bauer, as Saunders' men were keeping watch on Jane. Jane was shocked when she discovered her father's involvement with the Cordilla Virus attacks. She agreed to help Jack Bauer find Stephen Saunders. Her first phone call to her father interrupted Stephen as he was about to order his courier in San Francisco to infect the population there.

Saunders discovered the switch and then kidnapped Michelle Dessler, forcing Tony Almeida to commit treason and arrange for a hostage transfer. CTU discovered the plot and used it to their advantage, ending in the capture of Stephen Saunders.

When Saunders would not reveal the location of the other virus carriers, Jack later threatened to expose Jane. He conceded; however, he was shot and killed in CTU by Gael Ortega's wife later in the day before all the canisters could be contained.
