John Paul II was the Pope of the Catholic Church during Trinity. He had a personal bodyguard named Giancarlo Mettler who went everywhere with him.

The Pope was in Los Angeles for a conference. He was staying at the Cathedral presided over by Cardinal Mulrooney. Late in the night, Mulrooney informed him that Frank had been killed because of "the issue", referring to his abuse of children. They decided that they had to act, and Mulrooney employed Michael to deal with the situation.
