Joseph McGuckin was the president of McGuckin Petroleum, a company which had been granted access to drill in the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge.

At around 1:00pm, McGuckin flew out of the company's private airfield outside Fairbanks, Alaska. Around 1:25, the pilot, Wendell Adams, crashed the plane into the mountains outside Wiseman, killing McGuckin, Mike, and Adams.
