Joseph "Joe" Wald was an anti-government American terrorist. His crew included Eddie Grant, Chris, Scott, undercover agent Jack Bauer, Dave, and Frank.

Nina Myers came to Wald to contract him to blow up CTU Los Angeles. During his second meeting with her, he was given the schematics to CTU, and Eddie Grant took some pictures of Myers from down the block. Wald never learned her name during their interactions.

Five years prior to Day 2, Wald was arrested, due to the efforts of CTU agent Jack Bauer, undercover as Jack Roush.

Shortly prior to Day 2, Wald was again set up for a trial, and the key witness against him was Marshall Goren. In exchange for testifying against Wald, Goren would be cleared of charges of kidnapping and child pornography.

On the morning of the CTU bombing, Wald holed up at his Simi Valley house at 221 Canyon View Road, which was armed with a guard dog, security cameras, and a panic room. He received a call from Eddie, learning that Jack had killed Goren and arrived at Eddie's repair garage. He later learned that Jack would be replacing Dave in Eddie's mission to bomb CTU.

After CTU was successfully bombed, Eddie called to say he and the others were coming over when Jack pulled a gun on Eddie trying to place him under arrest. Eddie and the others tried to kill him, but Jack ended up killing them all. Jack went by himself to Wald's house. Jack knocked on the door telling Wald to let him in quick, saying something went down right after CTU's bombing. Wald let him in and Jack pulled a gun on him telling Wald that he had killed Eddie and the others for resisting arrest. Jack informed Wald that the bombing of CTU was only a diversion from a much bigger attack that day: a nuclear bomb set to go off in Los Angeles. Jack demanded to know who gave Wald the schematics, but Wald's dog attacked him, giving Wald an opportunity to sprint into the panic room. After shooting the dog, Jack went to the panic room, which was barred shut by a metallic door.

After some persuading from the other side, Wald finally opened the door, and showed Jack the pictures of the person who had originally come to him with the opportunity. The pictures were of Nina that Eddie had taken. However, knowing that he would go back to jail anyway, thanks to the government’s knowledge of his involvement in the bombing, Wald shot a bullet in the back of his throat.
