Marietta was the city outside Atlanta, Georgia, where the most violence against a Muslim community occured following the detonation of a terrorist nuclear weapon in the Mojave Desert during Day 2.

The nuclear bomb, smuggled into California by the terrorist group Second Wave and two networks of conspirators, was isolated by Jack Bauer, and the blast only killed one man. Despite this, a number of citizens began to spark riots against Islamic Americans in various locations. Marietta received the most news coverage: one field reporter from FOX gave a preliminary report concerning the increasing violence, and another reporter interviewed the racist mob leader.

To maintain order, President David Palmer ordered the National Guard in Georgia to Marietta. Lynne Kresge later informed Palmer that two people were subsequently killed by rubber bullets, a racist leader and a young boy. It was not specified if the racist that was killed was the same leader who spoke on national television.
