A mobile scanner was a scanning device fitted into Jack Bauer's SUV, that could scan both optical and magnetic information.
After escaping a shootout at 2350 Dunlop Plaza, Jack received a key card from Richard Walsh. Jamey Farrell informed him he could use his mobile scanner to send the data from the card to CTU by switching it to magnetic scanning, which he did. ("Day 1: 1:00am-2:00am")
A short while later, Jack pulled over again and switched his scanner back to optical to scan in the severed thumb of an assassin he had killed at Dunlop Plaza. He sent the thumbprint information to an agent at Data Services but they could not find a match on their database. ("Day 1: 2:00am-3:00am")
