Numerous members of congress (including Senator Debrah Drexler) voted for the Patriot Act in response to 9/11. Among the powers granted to law enforcement by the act included the ability to detain terrorist suspects—foreign or otherwise—indefinitely. The government would later try to replace the act with the New American Privacy Act. (Veto Power)
