Paul Koplin was an assistant to Ralph Burton, a private investigator that Kate Warner hired to look into Reza Naiyeer and his background.

While Koplin was investigating Reza with Kate, he discovered some self-deleting files and government data on the computer of Kate's father, Bob. He and Kate were later captured by men working for Syed Ali and Mohsen, Second Wave terrorists. To determine who else knew of their findings, Mohsen tortured Paul bare naked, as Kate was forced to watch. A saw was used to rip the flesh off of his back, and then Mohsen tossed a salt-like substance on the wound, causing Paul extreme pain. Once the terrorists were satisfied that Paul did not tell anyone about the data, Ali shot him to death in front of Kate.
