Russian gulag

The Russian gulag is a string of prisons in Northern Siberia, Russia. Since the Russians had limited access to high-tech equipment, they devised cheaper means of torturing and aquiring information from prisoners.

Ted Cofell, when interrogated by Jack Bauer, claimed not to know the location of Jack's captured wife and daugther. At about 10:20am, Jack mentioned the Russian gulag and, referring to a form of torture from there, showed Cofell a tightly-twisted towel. Jack claimed that he would force it into Cofell's throat, down to the stomach, and then remove it with his stomach lining. Cofell resisted the thought of the painful death, and Jack never used this form of torture as Cofell died of a heart attack soon after.
