San Francisco is a city in California, United States. CTU San Francisco is based in the city. Starting in Day 3, San Francisco was the second-choice target of three terrorist masterminds who were based in Los Angeles.

[edit] Day 3

During Day 3, the bio-terrorist ringleader Stephen Saunders ordered Ian, one of his virus couriers, to release a vial of the Cordilla virus in San Francisco. The only reason Saunders rescinded his order was because he was distracted by a call from his daughter, which was arranged by Jack Bauer. At the close of Day 3, Ian was killed by a sniper and his virus gear was safely confiscated.

During Day 5, a missile strike from the Natalia, which had been commandeered by Vladimir Bierko, was meant to hit the city. Bierko told his technician that he wanted the missiles to overlap the targets, to ensure a maximum number of casualties. The attack was foiled by Jack Bauer and Christopher Henderson.

[edit] Day 6

During Day 6 an aerial drone carrying a nuclear warhead was flown toward the city and was meant to be remotely detonated by Victor, a terrorist based in Los Angeles who worked for Dmitri Gredenko. As the drone approached, Victor was stopped and Jack Bauer took the controls. He steered the UAV clear of the city, but crash landed the craft in an industrial park in the outskirts. Though the detonation was aborted, this wreck caused the nuclear casing to be cracked, releasing biohazardous radiation. The responding emergency crews were exposed to this, and HAZMAT was sent on its way to clean the site.
