The Santa Monica Mountains were a east-west transverse mountain range in Los Angeles County, California, separating the inland San Fernando Valley from the Los Angeles basin and the sea. The mountains were something of a wilderness, covered in brush but crisscrossed with trails that nature worshippers used.
Passes through the mountains included Sepulveda Pass and Topanga Canyon. Mulholland Drive wound its way along the spine of the mountain range from east to west, crossing Coldwater. Griffith Park, home to the Griffith Park Observatory, was located on the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains. (Chaos Theory, "Day 1: 6:00am-7:00am", "Day 1: 3:00pm-4:00pm")
Mountaingate Drive and the Vanderbilt Complex were also situated in the mountains, overlooking the Interstate 405 and the Los Angeles basin. The Santa Monica Mountains Preserve was a wide tract of land that ran along the backbone of the mountains. (Cat's Claw)
During Day 1, Teri Bauer became stranded on Mulholland Drive when she realised Kevin Carroll was not who he claimed to be. Later in the day, she drove herself and her daughter through Griffith Park in an attempt to escape Jovan Myovic, but her parked car fell down a cliff. Thinking Kim was dead, she lost her memory and was picked up by Tanya, while Kim phoned a cab to take her to Rick's house. ("Day 1: 5:00am-6:00am", "3:00pm-4:00pm", "4:00pm-5:00pm")
During Day 2, Eddie Grant waited at a phone station in the mountains in order to lure a phone company van to the location. After kidnapping the phone technician Cam Strocker, and killing his partner, Eddie took their van and drove it to CTU Los Angeles with Jack, Chris and Scott. After their operation was done they returned to a clearing in the mountains where Jack, who was undercover at the time, killed them and drove away to find Joseph Wald.
