Special guest star is a casting designation usually reserved for big name actors or previous cast members. It is similar to, but separate from Special guest appearance. Special guest stars are payed on a higher scale than guest stars, but on a lower scale than guest appearances.

The special guest star is listed after the guest cast in season one, but before the guest cast in all other seasons. The credit is used in every season except Season 2.
