Special guest appearance is a casting designation reserved for big name actors or previous cast members. It is similar to, but used far less often than special guest star. Special guest appearances are payed on a higher scale than guest stars, and special guest stars.
So far only two actors have received this billing, Dennis Haysbert in Season 4 and 5 and Jon Voight in 24: Redemption and Season 7. Special guest appearance is always the final credit of the cast before the production credits.
