Tomas Sherek was a Turkish operative working for Navi Araz and Habib Marwan on Day 4. He was responsible for the planning of the Santa Clarita valley train bombing, which served as a decoy for the kidnapping of Secretary of Defense James Heller. A known terrorist working with a number of groups operating outside Istanbul, Turkey, Sherek was accused of co-ordinating a number of suicide bombings at unnamed locations during the summer prior to Day 4, and in his earlier days at CTU Jack Bauer had connected him to a series of complicated bombings in Europe during the 1990s.
Sherek acquired help to enter the U.S. via Mexico just before Day 4, before murdering his accomplices to cover his tracks.

Following the bombing at 7am, CTU agent Chloe O'Brian heard from a source that Sherek, listed on the FBI watchlist, had been spotted in Los Angeles prior to the attack. Chloe gave fellow agent Sarah Gavin the responsibility of tracking Sherek, and a CTU briefing concluded that he would attempt to leave the United States following the train attack.
Sherek called Navi Araz at his home to inform him that the train bombing was a success, and that a briefcase containing a Dobson-type override device had been secured for Marwan's operation. Meanwhile, Sarah Gavin tracked Sherek to a dry cleaning store owned by a Turkish holding company, where CTU Director of Field Operations Ronnie Lobell apprehended him.
On his return to CTU, Jack Bauer attempted to convince CTU Director Erin Driscoll that a terrorist of Sherek's stature wouldn't risk exposing himself in the United States for a train bombing. Driscoll ignored this, and an interrogation by Lobell yielded nothing but silence from Sherek. Jack, using earlier intelligence discovered by Chloe and Sarah about a possible terrorist action at 8am, lost patience with CTU's lack of progress. Knocking out a guard and locking himself into the interrogation room, Jack extracted a confession from Sherek by shooting him just above the knee. Sherek broke and revealed that the 8am target was indeed Secretary Heller, confirming Jack's suspicions that his train bombing operation was a mere diversion for a bigger plan.
