Tony Plana was born in Havana, Cuba in 1954. His family moved to Miami in 1960. Plana is a graduate of Loyola Marymount University and he trained in acting in London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He has been married to actress Ada Maris since 1988 and they have two children.

Through his career, Plana has appeared in countless films and TV shows. Some of the shows in which he has guest starred are Remington Steele (with Xander Berkeley), The Equalizer (on Keith Szarabajka), Miami Vice (with Michael Madsen), Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (with Alexander Siddig and Natalija Nogulich), ER (with Eriq La Salle), Nash Bridges (with Jaime Gomez), The West Wing (with Devika Parikh and Glenn Morshower), and Motive (with Roger Cross).
