Seen are you are the king of 24 merchandise I thought you'd be the best person to ask about this. In my time I've collected a few promotional copies of 24 DVDs that are limited/special editions (you can see some of them on my collection image). I don't know how to include these into the project but I think its important that we do. There's a special edition cover of Season 1, Season 3, and I've seen a special Season 4 once but I didn't win it on eBay. Also there's a shop in England called HMV who have released their own covers of Season 5, Season 6 (which I have) and Redemption. What I was thinking is that since they are all R2 (or at least all work on my DVD player) we just have a "Different covers" section or something like that on the R2 DVD pages, and just have a gallery of the different covers. Does that sound like a good idea to you? I'll get some scans of my different covers in the near future to demonstrate them. --SignorSimon _{(talk/contribs/email)} 20:33, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

Yes, but as opposed to what? Creating separate articles for them? I think that would be a bad idea. If the main content of a DVD set is the same, alternate covers, alternate packaging, extra bonus discs, etc. can just be additional information on the main DVD set's page. There have been a few alternate covers in R1 as well (S1-4 slimpak editions, S6: Limited Editon, and Redemption: Digitial Copy Edition), all of which still need be added to their respective articles, too. Are you proposing it to look similar to the way that Memory-Alpha does their alternate book covers? For the record, I don't like how they combine their DVD collections from all regions, but perhaps their method of showing the different covers in the sidebar is another option for your proposal. --proudhug 20:53, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

[edit] We have a problem

Looks like Wikia have inserted some new policy where if you search a username without writing User: first it still goes to their page e.g. just writing Proudhug directs to your page (and not as a redirect). This causes problems with users who have names that are things on the show, e.g. Deep Sky now just goes to a user page. In that instance it's quite important that such a thing doesn't happen, and could be work if, say, a user comes along by the name of Jack Bauer. It seems it's not a problem. In the case of a conflict, it takes you to the main namespace, rather than the User namespace. Try "Michelle Dessler" and "User:Michelle Dessler". --proudhug 22:26, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Images question

Figured you were the best person to ask about this: I've been going through and replacing a bunch of images these past few days and it seems like many times the thumbnails refuse to update. The Day 7 6:00pm-7:00pm page is an example, that image of Jack choking out Bill I replaced it with a non-watermarked screencap from the DVD on May 22nd and now it's May 26th and the thumbnail has yet to update (though when you click through to the full-sized image you see the replaced version). I'm not sure if it's my browser cache or if there's something wrong with the wiki, or if it's just delayed (though sometimes it updates instantly and other times it doesn't). Hello, Proudhug. I've seen your 24 collection and I think it is great, mainly because I enjoy looking at pictures detailing fan collections of any type of media. I noticed you deleted an article I created about a location; the Willough and Willingham parking lot from Day 1, where Jack drove with Ted Cofell. Since I hadn't noticed I had no chance to contest it, but what was the reason? Thief12 04:04, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

Sorry about that. The reason it was deleted is because "Willough and Willingham" is not an address. Each of the two streets is worthy of their own individual articles, but the intersection itself is not. Also, Simon complained about the terrible quality photo with a Fox logo on it, which could've been replaced with a better DVD capture. --proudhug 01:11, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Haha, funnily enough I've never been a Kiefer Sutherland fan. I greatly appreciate his professionalism and dedication to the show and the character, but otherwise, I've never been overly impressed by him. I've been a fan of the format of the show since the beginning, however. Actually, I've been advocating for years that the show could be greatly improved if they let go of the Jack Bauer character and explored other options. Not to change the subject, but this idea of mine really doesn't need its own heading anywhere. I just noticed that Proudhug tagged the "oou" icon to a disambig page, and a thought came to me: can't we just put the icons:oou template directly inside the disambig template itself? Sorry about the recent wacky numbering in unnamed characters pages. I thought I was supposed to use the number with which they are credited in the show, which doesn't follow a strict order. Thief12 21:51, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

How would you feel about weighing in on the "who shot Emerson" situation? I'm beginning to think it was Tony. Alot of people, including the 24 website, say it was Tony as well. Hey, just wanted to let you know that I created the IRS article because the US Government sidebar had a link to it. There are some of the other organizations and agencies mentioned in that sidebar that don't have 24 information as well, so I thought it would be good to have them all working. Yeah, I knew that's why you added it, but I just don't think it's a good idea to have articles hanging around with no 24 information on them, even if there is stuff to be added later. I agree, but someone already created the quotes page. They shouldn't have created it, but since it already exists, it's kinda silly to move them back to the main episode page and delete the quotes page, only to have to move them back again to the quotes page once there are enough to warrant the move. Absolutely amazing! What an incredible encounter that must have been. Glenn's such a solid actor and a universal fan favorite for obvious reasons. Of all the cast I've ever wanted to meet, he's always been in my top three. He certainly seems like a genuinely happy fellow, and I'm interested to know what some of his specific motivational seminar points were about if you find a moment. Did you know the settings change you made affected everyone who visits here? You were out for awhile, but in Forum:Skin and Main Page I and Simon spent a lot of time with a Wikia helper in designing a custom Monaco skin that would reflect the new changes across wikia. Even the Main Page was reconstructed to fit Monaco for outside visitors. I think the default needs to be reverted. – Blue Rook 04:10, 2 September 2008 (UTC)_talkcontribs

Yeah, I hit that by accident, sorry. I was fiddling around and trying out the new monaco. I'm not a fan at all. I don't understand why the FA and OTD box on the main page is so far over to the right. It looks horrible in both Monaco and Monobook. Maybe my resolution's just too big, so it leaves this gaping hole between the news and the FA. --Proudhug 04:14, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

I figured as much; the FA and OTD are over to the right, I think, to be roughly the same size as those mandatory advertisements. It took me awhile to get used to it, but the adverts are always a tad unsettling. However I don't have the large gap you mention; I suspect this is either 1) the square advert isn't loading on your computer or 2) it's the resolution like you mentioned. For me, there is a gap, but it's caused by an unusually small FA entry, and is found in a different spot than yours, mine is to the right of the news, but below OTD and above QOTD.

I'm going to update the FA so perhaps this will help. On a random note: how do you feel about the creation of placeholders for all of the red-linked OTDs and QOTDs? I believe red links on the Main Page suck, and would prefer bland placeholders to red links any day, especially there. Are we allowed to put IU dates on the OTD section? i.e. can we put Hamri Al-Assad's birthday on it? Just thought if we did that as well we might have a few less red links. Here's what the page looks like for me. It would look better to have the FA/OTD box moved to the left beside the news and leave the new add by itself on the right (I think this is how it was before). How does this ruin things for a smaller resolution? Also, why did we agree to the Monaco skin? Just because PeterParker asked us? So that anonymous users will have the same look? I'm just curious.

As for placeholder templates, I'd been adding them in as I got to them, but they're still not there for every day, yet. We still have tons of birthdays to add, with more coming every time an episode airs, so I have full confidence we'll eventually have every day filled in. I'd thought about putting IU dates in the OTD box, but I think it would just add confusion. Nothing on the Main Page is IU, so it would seem out of place to me. --Proudhug 13:54, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

Judging from the image I'd say that problem is definitely on account of your huge screen resolution. I don't believe that is a common resolution to have, but also understand why you can't stand having that gap. As to how your idea would affect the look of the Main Page, I am bad at predicting that kind of thing, so I'd recommend experimenting / trial and error. Give me a poke whenever you want a screen from me about how it looks on my machine.

Concerning the skin, I don't recall there being much of a choice, because Monaco was announced by Wikia to be the new default:

We have to standardize the way our site looks across all wikis, using the Monaco skin for anonymous users. In the past, communities have used various skins – Monaco, Quartz or Monobook. That's a luxury that we can't afford to offer any more, as advertisers strongly prefer a consistent look-and-feel.

The place that had all the answers for me was: Wikia's_New_Style. It's the most customizable in light of the mandatory ads and increases the size of the community. I saw your move of Raja Fenske to RJ Fenske, and something came to mind. Awhile back, I remember asking what we should do in a case like, with Victor, he was credited as "Gredenko's Programmer" but we knew he had a name anyway. Your response was (and obviously still is) an idea that I enthusiastically embraced: we aren't interested in robotically copying the Credits list letter-for-letter; our "Dramatis personae" lists are not supposed to be facsimiles. So we agreed to list them as: Actor as Victor (as "Gredenko's Programmer). What I'm bringing up for change right now, is that we apply that same logic to actors' names. Even though Fenske is credited as RJ, his actual name as he professionally identifies himself is Raja Fenske. "RJ Fenske" is, in this light, an anomaly or error, an alternate name for the actor.

So, ultimately, I'm promoting the idea that we restore the actor's article to his IMDB spelling, and all actors as well. If there is a difference between an actor's spelling between the 24 credits and IMDB, we should go with the IMDB spelling as his article title, and use redirects from the alternate, 24 spelling. We would then appropriately note it on the actor's article that he/she was credited under a different spelling. Thoughts? – Blue Rook 18:36, 30 August 2008 (UTC)_talkcontribs

It seems to me this is too problematic. The only time I'd think it appropriate to deviate from an actor's credited name is when it's blatantly misspelled. Fenske's name wasn't misspelled; that's the name he was professionally credited as at the time he was on 24. According to IMDb, he was credited this way on at least two other shows. If he later appears on 24 credited as "Raja Fenske," then we would move the article to his most recent name. But to track down every actor's most recent and commonly credited name would be an absurd effort. Do you really think that if Xander Berkeley starts going by "Alexander Berkeley," we should move his article to that name, despite him not being on 24 since the second season? Since this is an encyclopedia for 24, I'm thinking we should name articles after the way people were credited on this show, no?

Hey Proudhug!

My name is Nathan and I'm a wikia helper with the entertainment team. With the roll-out of Wikia's New Style, there's a couple of changes that'll be happening around here, and we'd like to help you transition into them.

The first change is moving into the Monaco Skin. We love your current look, and would like to help you set up the same look and feel in the Monaco format.

Second, the main page will be incorporating an extra ad, and will need to follow a two-column format. Here's a draft I put together from your current main page that won't break once the ads are turned on.

Hello there, I'm relatively new to editing 24 Wikia, generally as I've been relatively busy co-ordinating the 24 Wikiproject on the English Wikipedia. I'm Steve Crossin on there. Anyway, I'm here to ask a few things. While I'm fully aware that this is not Wikipedia, and I've used 24 Wikia many a time, I have a few questions. Is presenting real world information on this Wiki not allowed? It's something I haven't really seen much of here, and I've been fighting rather hard on Wikipedia to not have articles merged, specifically Martha Logan, which is now listed there as a Good Article. As your the founder of this wiki, I thought I'd ask you. Additionally, I read the Image use policy, and it says,

Remember that Wiki 24 is not an image gallery! We have a finite amount of disk space and bandwidth available, and that space would be best used for adding more articles. The old adage "a picture is worth a thousand words" is quite literally true, considering average file sizes for images. Please upload images solely for the purpose of illustration. Generally, no more than one or two images should be used in an article; three images might be acceptable for some long articles.

Now, I have no issue at all with how 24 Wikia runs or works, but the Martha Logan article, seems the image use there is a bit excessive. What are your thoughts on this?

And additionally, I notice there's a stack of buttons missing in the "edit" toolbar, namely redirect, insert image, and quite a few others. It depends on what you mean by "real world" information. There are two kinds of articles on Wiki 24, In-Universe (IU) and Out-Of-Universe (OOU). We accept articles for every actor and crew person who has worked on the show or any of its spin-offs or "expanded universe" material, as well as articles for each episode, comic, novel, reference book, CD, etc. These are all OOU articles, as they don't exist within the narrative of the show itself. It's when you want to add information into an IU article that things get tricky. Our policy is to only accept information that has been specifically given by the show or a spin-off novel/comic/game/etc. For example, we know that Aaron Pierce served under President Reagan, but, as no other information was given on this person, that's all we can't include in the main body of his article. There are two exceptions, however. The "Background information and notes" section can provide additional useful information, such as Reagan's first name and his years of service. And sometimes there is far too little information to even make an article without adding outside information. For example, a character may mention "Paris" but nothing about it. In this case, we can include the contextual information that Paris is a city in France. Additionally, external links to Wikipedia or other sources is often useful for real world IU articles.

As for the image use policy, that was copied directly from Star Trek's Memory Alpha by the other co-founder of Wiki 24, so I don't know that it necessarily applies to us. As I'm not an image crazy person, I really have no opinion on this. I don't see a problem with long articles having lots of images, provided they're spaced out and not all bunched together. Episode guides, for example.

We're very glad to have someone so MediaWiki savvy with us, and any button additions you think would be beneficial, for sure whip it up and we can add them in. I don't however see the point of the quotation template. The Main Page quote is set up by being assigned per day, rather than randomly generated. If you feel your idea is better, bring it up in the Situation Room and see what response it gets. This is another aspect that I really have no opinion on. --Proudhug 00:28, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Right o, I'll add the MediaWiki code that you should add, on the MediaWiki's talk page, as it can be added only by an administrator. I added it here. It looks odd, but it works perfectly, I've done it on other wikis where I am an administrator. Additionally, as I see that the articles on characters here are mostly in-universe, I have no issue with that. Personally, I'd like to work on the episode guides that are incomplete. I'll probably struggle at firstm being used to writing out-of-universe and all.

Hey, you recently deleted the MediaWiki Common.js file. I left a note to the admin who posted the code, they didn't post it right. Could you do it? It's not a code issue, the code just needs to be copied from the talk page to the MediaWiki page, and the line, /* Any JavaScript here will be loaded for all users on every page load. */ needs to be removed. It means "Out Of Universe". OOU is real life, like when we talk about Actors, Episodes, split screens, and the like. The opposite is IU, or In Universe, which refers to the 24 fictional universe. 1. I've noticed that at least three times I've answered other people's questions to you on your own talk page. I assumed that since I wouldn't mind if someone it did over on my page, other folks wouldn't mind either, but I see now that's just an assumption. Is that annoying, should I stop?
2. Whenever I find a very minor background appearance for Secret Service agents like Cole and the others, I have been putting in brief statements describing where they were. Would it be advisable to do the same kind of thing for Berkin, or not since it would be too large an endeavor for such an insignificant character?
3. A user named Ggjk has come along and started filling out the Deaths on 24 page. If I remember correctly you had a running tally of parts to update to that page eventually. Is his work consistent with yours? 1. It's not annoying at all. If anything, it's annoying to have people ask general questions about the site on my talk page, as opposed to in the Situation Room. As I said on Markdanielmiller's talk page, you're usually more articulate than I am, so feel free to jump in, even if it's not a general topic. If I have anything to add to your comments, either complimentary or contradictory, I'll do so. I thank you for your initiative.
2. Berkin has so many appearances, it might not be feasible to put anything noteworthy for every appearance, but I'm sure general statements like "Berkin was present with Palmer at the OC during Day 2" might suffice. I might go back later and make more specific notes about his appearances and what information might be worth putting on his page.
3. I'm not paying any attention to the work done on the page for episodes past the point that I've worked on. As I get to each episode, I'm changing/fixing/removing/adding to the current content. The only inconsistency I've noticed is the inclusion of "unknown" amounts of people. We include in our encyclopedia some clips of dialogue (such as the Memorable Quotes sections) but keeping entire episode transcripts strikes me as an obvious case of copyright violation. Nearly everything here is copyrighted, and we use it all under fair-use claims, but I can't summon a similar reason for posting entire transcripts. If FOX ever lets their transcripts be posted legally, then I imagine it would be permissible to post here.

Also, it's difficult to say how serious you were about the effort. The page was riddled with rudimentary spelling errors and written in a tone unsuited for an encyclopedia. We remove material like that, and post some advice on the creator's talk page (see yours!), to give users time to consider whether they would like to seriously go forward with it. - Blue Rook 02:51, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

Two bits: how come the AFD template tag isn't a pna? Sometime back you moved it from "pna-afd" to just "afd." If a page being nominated for deletion can't be called "a page that needs attention," I don't know what is. I ask primarily because I have a Merge and a Move tag ready to post for use, but now I'm not sure if I should call them pna's or leave them naked like afd.

On a second topic while I'm here, I'm curious as to why you removed the === After Day 2 === subheading from above the Stories link in Hector's and Ramon's articles. I guess I view a "page needing attention" as a page that needs to be fixed up or worked on. Something that's possibly going to be deleted will get no work. I guess it depends on your interpretation of "attention."

The heading removal was an accident. I was removing the redirect to a redirect. I put "Before Day 3" instead, since that's the only reference point for the characters.

That rationale for not labeling it a "pna" is definitely a reasonable one, so it can go either way. I was thinking of renaming it {{Pna-delete}} for consistency, however, and also because it follows the broader definition of "attention". After mulling that over, do you think the upcoming {{Pna-merge}} and {{Pna-move}} templates should be preceded by pna as seen here, or no? Third question: also on that topic and more basically, do you think we actually even need Move and Merge templates (I'll say yes, otherwise I wouldn't have gone and created them).

Regarding the Salazar Bros. appearances, I think it's pretty obvious that "Stories" occurs Before Day 3 because it's listed before it, so saying that in a sub-heading is redundant and not particularly informative. But, those two men had nothing to do with Day 2, so restoring "After Day 2" isn't more convincing, either. I'm seeing both sides on this one, yet I'm favoring the latter, simply because it's consistent with every other time Stories is given a sub-heading, and also slightly more informative. I don't think Wiki 24 is big enough to need the merge and move templates, but if you want to have them and use them, that's fine. You can change the AFD to PNA-DELETE, too, if you like. I have no problem with that. I think it's fine the way it is, but you probably have a stronger opinion about it than I do. I see what you mean about the afd- it's not a notice about the content, but the whole article itself, which does make it different than the other PNAs. Which makes me think it might be useful to make content maintenance PNAs (those which already exist) and article maintenance PNAs (such as delete, merge, and move). They're all for pages that need input, but for two different reasons. I'll add them to the Bullpen, noting those two categories, let me know what you think.

Also, like we have a Template:Welcome for new users, we also have a Template:Status for users who make the common error of screwing up statuses. I've recently modified two more for our little arsenal against frequent offenses: Template:Spoilers for users who post spoilers (the warning might be a better first step than a ban, which I think could be saved for strike two), and a Template:Ineligiblevote for folks who add votes which are invalid for any reason on the Featured page. In early October you removed the defaultsort from the Jack Bauer article, but dropped one in for Marcy today. Can it be inferred that you now consider this an option for alphabetizing categories? Hey, I know this is a bit late seeing I did this article ages ago, but on the Season 5 dvd covers for region 4 it says there are 6 discs, but there are actually 7. My dilemma is that for all of the R4 DVD's, excluding Season 1 and 6, are marked as having only 6 discs, but in the collection I have, they have a limited time only seventh disc. That's why I didn't put it in the actual articles as having a seperate sub-heading for Disc 7, as the people who didn't buy them in time would only have 6, therefore rendering the info as incorrect. Oh, okay, I see now. Well then the main DVD page should list only the normal number of DVDs, while the information about the bonus discs can go on the pages for the individual sets. The R1 Season 5 set came with three different exclusive bonus discs at three different stores, so there are ten total discs available, however, any given set only included 7 or 8. --Proudhug 23:21, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

I figured out why people keep posting at the bottom of Talk pages: they're clicking on the little + tab next to the edit tab, which automatically adds material to the very bottom. I doubt they're clicking Edit, and then scrolling all the way down, and then ignoring the warning that's clearly there. After periods, do we double space or single space? I've seen it both ways.

Also, any grammar stuff could go in this topic, I guess. For continuity of our encyclopedia.

I was always taught in school to type two spaces after a sentence, but I don't know if it's an absolute rule or anything. I tend to change any single spaces I find, but I'd hardly consider it bad grammar or style or anything.

OK, so this is a thing of mine, but the double spacing issue is something that was created for typewriters to have correct place setting. Computers, however, can do it automatically, and therefore, using double spaces does nothing but create extra code. I didn't learn this until college when it was pounded into my head in English and journalism classes. It does absolutely nothing on a computer, and if the default font is something monospaced, it looks quite odd.
