Winrich Kolbe (August 9, 19402012; age 72) was a director of two episodes of Season 1 of 24.

Biography and career[]

Winrich Kolbe was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He moved to the United States to study architecture, but ended up being drafted during the Vietnam War. He served as an artillery spotter in the US Army.

After that, Kolbe began a career in television during the 1970s. He started out as a associate producer on shows such as Quincy M.E. and The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries. After that, he became a recurring director for shows such as Magnum, P.I., T.J. Hooker, Scarecrow and Mrs. King, Knight Rider, Spenser: For Hire, Hunter, In the Heat of the Night, Lois and Clark, Millennium, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and the 2000 version of The Fugitive (starring Mykelti Williamson). He directed forty-eight episodes of Star Trek across four separate series, most prominently The Next Generation, including its Hugo Award-winning finale, "All Good Things..."; this episode featured an appearance by Andreas Katsulas). Other episodes he directed included work by his future 24 coworker Brannon Braga and featuring fellow future 24 alumni, such as Albie Selznick and James Cromwell.

Many of the shows Kolbe directed were written by 24 scribes Chip Johannessen, Robert Cochran, Howard Gordon, David Fury and Alex Gansa. Kolbe also served as professor of Film and Television at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia. He left in 2007, when his health began to decline.

Kolbe died in September 2012.
